DAY 2: Approach to the Condoriri group, trekking

This trek is really interesting because it ascends completely solitary mountains; the complete silence of the mountains is only disturbed when passing llamas break up the ice underneath their hooves, creating small trickles while they wind their way down to Lake Titicaca. From these altitudes you can observe the silvery shimmer of light reflected by the world’s highest navigable lake, while trekking in the company of numerous llamas, the occasional alpaca (they are shy) and many smaller animals such as viscachas, lizards, ibises and gulls.

In order to arrive at this magical place, we must first travel to a small village called "Plaza de llamas". It takes about one hour and forty five minutes by car from La Paz. Here we will be met by our porters who will carry all the essential necessities on the backs of their llamas. The trek commences at a height of 4.300m, where we will trek progressively to an altitude of 4.600m until we reach our first camp, on the shores of the beautiful Chiara-Khota lagoon (3hours trekking.)

Day 3: Chiara-Khota lagoon to the foot of Maria Lloco Glacier

An early wakeup call is well worth the bother as we observe the beautiful Andean sun, rise over the snow covered mountains (great photo ops for enthusiasts). Today we will reach two mountain passes, observe part of the majestic Huayna Potosi Mt (6088m) and then start our climbing to reach the first pass at 4850, then we start to descend very slowly and enjoy the landscape, after a short break we get ready in order to reach the second pass at 4759m, from this point we start climbing down and find our camping area near Maria Lloco, camping at 4650m.

Day 4: Maria Lloco Glacier – Huayna Potosí base camp.

Today we will be able to observe lakes with inexplicably beautiful colors; around 12:30 we arrive to the base camp of Huayna Potosi Mt. After a good lunch meal, in the afternoon we start our practice in the old glacier with the assistance of our mountain guide (all of them have extensive experience with all kinds of different groups), so this afternoon you will get familiarize yourselves with the equipment, and practice on the glacier. Thus you don’t need any experience beforehand, after approximately 3 hours we will get back to the refuge to heat up our bodies; we spend the night in the lodge.

Day 5: Base Camp to high Camp Huayna Potosi Mt.

After a good breakfast we start our ascent to “Campo Alto”, 5000 meters. The route is well marked and leads to an evident moraine edge where we will set up our tents and after a short break we begin to check and verify the mountain gear. We will eat early and try to get some rest in order to be refreshed when we commence our climb to the top.

Day 6: Attempt to reach the top

After a very early breakfast (around midnight) we will begin heading up the glacier, aiming towards the east face and arriving at the “Pala”. We then continue arriving all the way at the top of Mt. Huayna Potosi (6080 meters), about six hours of ascent. Once at the top we’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes Mountains and the sun rising to the east.
