9days -8nights Trekking Cordillera Real, Sorata Circuit

This trek begins in the village of Sorata (north-east of the Cordillera Real) and will quickly take us to a high point to make a beautiful trek along the Illampu and Ancohuma massifs. A trekking in the foothills of the "Colossuses" that will allow us to cross beautiful lakes and incredible trails with unique views of glaciers and green tropical valleys.

This trip will take us through remote valleys, crossing several high passes at over 4500m, so good acclimatization and physical condition is recommended.

Day 1: La Paz - Sorata

Departure from your hotel at 08:00am in private transport with your guide and cooks towards Sorata, 150km from La Paz, a village with a temperate climate and located at the foot of the majestic Illampu Massif (6,368m). Sorata is an agricultural center with 3,500 inhabitants approximately.

Day 2: Sorata - Lackatiya

In the morning we meet our muleteers on the outskirts of the town. The trek begins with a long ascent through Kilambaya (3,300m) for about 3 hours of trekking and another 4 hours to the hamlet of Lacatiya (3,900m) where we set up our first camp. The Illampu, at 6,430m, shows its full splendour on a clear day.

Hiking time: 7 hours; Gradient: +1,200m

Day 3: Lackathiya - Utjaña Pampa

Leaving Lackathiya, the ascent is slow and leisurely, it takes about 3 hours of climbing to reach the highest point, the Illampu Pass (4730m), if the weather is good, the reward is the best view, as the snowy Illampu Mountain domain covers the entire route, from this point we begin the descent to the hamlet of Utjaña Pampa (3890m), where we will set up our camp. From the Illampu Pass at 4,750m you can see the Schulze peak (5,950m alt.) and the Illampu North peak (6,370m). Walking time: 6.5 hours; Gradient: +830m/-840m

Day 4: Utjana Pampa - Cocoyo

In the morning we climb to the Kharahuasi Pass (4450m) from where we begin our descent to Cocoyo, a mountain valley with spectacular scenery. Once in the valley, we cross the Cocoyo River, whose milky waters clearly show its glacial origin. There is a mining community in the valley, also called Cocoyo (3510m). Beyond the town we find ourselves in the Sarani Valley where we set up camp. Hiking time: 6 hours; Gradient: +560m/-940m

Day 5: Cocoyo - Chajolpaya Valley

We leave Sarani camp, it is a long climb to the pass, Sarani (4500m). From here we make a short descent to the Chajolpaya valley (4100m). We set up camp in a meadow near the village, walking time 7-8 hours; Gradient: +990m/-400m

Day 6: Chajolpaya Valley - Chojña Kota Lagoon

Hike through the Chajolpaya Valley towards the Calzada Pass (5050m), the highest point of the entire trek, located between the glaciers of the Kasiri and Calzada mountains. We descend for an hour and a half along the southwest slope of the mountain range to the Carizal Lagoon (4770m) and the Chojña Kota Lagoon, where we will set up camp. Walking time: 6-7 hours; Gradient: +620m/-280m

Day 7: Chojña Kota Lagoon - San Francisco Lagoon

Today we have a great view over the Ancohuma. We will start the walk on flat terrain until we reach the Ajoyan Lagoon (4670m), from where we will have a wonderful view of the Calzada Mountain. Then we continue until we reach the Cacha Lagoon and continue our journey along the mountainside until we reach a beautiful valley where the turquoise San Francisco Lagoon (4500m) is located. A few minutes from the campsite there are some hot springs where we can take a relaxing bath. Walking time: 6/7 hours

8: Laguna San Francisco - Lojena

We climb to the Chotanlona Pass, 4910m. From here we will have incredible views (if we have good weather) of Lake Titicaca to the west, the Ancohuma Mountain to the north and the rest of the Cordillera Real with the Calzada and Kasiri glaciers to the east. We continue up and down the mountainside, passing through small lagoons until we reach Lojena (4360m), where we set up camp.

Walking time: 5 hours; Gradient: +410m/-550m

Day 9: Lojena - La Paz

We will hike to the town of Milipaya (3490m), the end of the tour, where our transport will be waiting to take us back to La Paz for approximately 3 hours. Once in the city of La Paz, transfer to your hotel. End of services.

Breakfast consists of: fruit juice, tea, coffee, chocolate, milk, cereals, yoghurt, bread or pancakes, jam, in the afternoon and while the cook is preparing dinner: hot water (tea, coffee and biscuits). At midday you will have cold food for lunch: sandwiches, fruit, chocolate, sweets. Dinner: Vegetable or cream soup and a main course.

  • One night's accommodation in a hotel **in the town of Sorata. (Double accommodation).
  • Three-season camping tents with space for three people (to be used by 2 clients)
  • Foam mattresses and air mattresses.
  • Private transport La Paz - Sorata - Millipaya - La Paz
  • Mules and muleteers to carry most of our mountain equipment: Camping equipment, (clients should only carry their daily backpacks) It is recommended to limit the weight per client to 8 kilos to be transported by pack animals.
  • Pukina Travel, will provide duffle bags to be carried by the mules.
