Copacabana has been a permanent center of tourism and pilgrimages from early times (from the beginning of the Colony). The main attraction of the place is an image of the dark Madonna, carved by a native of noble origin called Tito Yupanqui, around the year of 1582. It is not easy to describe the artistic excellences of the image; if contemplating it carefully, you can feel a strong spiritual emotion.
DAY 1
We leave from La Paz running northwest across the Altiplano. Along the way you will observe imposing views of the Royal Andean Range as well as the Titicaca Lake. After three and a half hours, we arrive to this emblematic and spiritual center. Once we arrive to this pleasant little town of Copacabana, we will find our hotel.
After lunch we will visit the imposing cathedral that shows mudéjar influences in its design, with whitewashed stone walls and multiple domes decorated with deep blue tiles. This temple was originally build by the Augustinian order to house the miraculous Virgin de Copacabana, a beautiful image with a native Andean face, dressed in lavish robes embroidered with gold and silver thread and crowned with a golden halo. The massive gold altarpiece is also remarkable, decorated with silver leaves brought from the Potosi mines and also paintings from the 18th century of invaluable cost decorate the interiors of the church.
We suggest enjoying the beautiful sunset on the top of the Calvary hill.
DAY 2
After breakfast we start our journey on board of a motor boat sailing on the highest navigable lake 3.800m.a.s.l in order to visit the south section of the sacred Sun Island. There are two main attractions: The Yumani area where we will find a water fountain, which is supposed to grant eternal youth and Picocaina area, a mysterious Inca Ruin. After the visit of these highlights, we will enjoy a typical aymaran lunch “Apthapi” fried trout or king fish, fried kitchen, with boiled potatoes, beans, cheese and fresh fruits of the season. After lunch we continue towards the Moon Island, where the chosen ones “The virgins of the God Sun”, lived. We will visit the ruins before getting back to Copacabana in the afternoon. At this point we return to Copacabana or you can continue by a touristic bus to Puno at 18:30pm.
- Option of the typical Aymara lunch “Aptaphi” just in the Private and Classic Options. In the Budget Option and due the shorter time to visit the Sun Island we will have a lunch box: 2 sandwiches of ham and cheese, fruits of the season, and one personal bottle of water.
