6d5n Illampu circuit

This High Mountain Hike in the Cordillera Real will undoubtedly captivate lovers of rugged landscapes, it is considered one of the great classics of hiking in South America.

The starting point is Sorata village, from this point we arrive in our all-terrain vehicle to Lakathiya at 4000m. The highest point and goal of the trek is the Andean pass Calzada at 5045 meters above sea level. The lowest point of the route is at the end of the trek is Millipaya at 2.700m. During the trek, you cross six Andean passes, five of them over 4,700 meters. During the six days of trekking, approximately 81 km are covered on foot.

Itinerary:

Day 1: La Paz-Sorata-Lakathia

Pick up at the hotel in La Paz, at 08:00 we arrive for lunch time after 4 hours’ drive, then in the afternoon drive from Sorata to Lakathia (4000m), 2 hours’ drive, we set our camping tents overnight (-/L/D)

Day 2: Lakhatia-Utaña Pampa

From Lakathia (4000m) we start our trekking the first part uphill in order to arrive to the Illampu Pass (4740m), about 3 hours trekking, then continue to the campsite at Utaña Pampa 3890m. in the area of Ancohuma (walking time 6.5 hours, approx. 12km, 800 m ↑, 900 m ↓ ) overnight in camping tents (B/BL/D)

Day 3: Utaña Pampa - Cocoyo

Today we leave Utaña Pampa (3890m) over the Khara Huasi Pass (4450m) about 2.5 hours trekking, from this point we star descending to our camping site near the village of Cocoyo (3510m) crossing a small river of the same name (walking time 6-7 hours, approx. 14km, 560 m ↑, 940 m ↓) overnight in camping tents (B/BL/D)

Day 4: Cocoyo-Chajolpaya-Venaduni lagoon

Today we leave for the longest trekking day and like every morning we start the day going up, we reach the pass of Sarani (4.500m), after a long up-hill trekking, from where we go downhill near Chajolapaya at (4.100m) then we continue towards the south, and once againg up-hill until we arrive to Venaduni lagoon (4.750m) the highest altitude camping area during our traverse.

Day 5: Venaduni lagoon - Chojña Khota-San Francisco

From Chajolpaya (4745m) over the Calzada Pass at 5045m after 2 hours trekking, from this point we start descending 1.5 hours until we arrive to Chojña Khota and again we re-star our trekking up-hill to find San Francisco pass at 4970m is the only day that we need to reach 2 passes, then about 2 hours in order to find our campsite at San Francisco lagoon (4,500m). Few minutes from our camping area we can find some hot springs where you can take a good soak. (Walking time 6-7 hours, approx. 14km, 300 m ↑, 545 m ↓) (B/BL/D)

Day 6: San Francisco – Millipaya

We start from San Francisco we will arrive at the pass of 4,870m, from this point on a clear day you can see Lake Titicaca to the west also the beautiful Cerro Ancohuma, to the north and the rest of the mountains of the Cordillera Real, in summary the views are one of the best among the others we find in this circuit. Then we start descending until we arrive to the community of Millipaya at (3.490m), our transportation will be waiting for us to drive us back to La Paz. (Walking time 5-6 hours, approx. 10km, 370 m ↑, 1380m ↓) (B/BL/D)

The service includes:

  • Bilingual (English – Spanish) trekking guide
  • All meals, during the days of the trek, according to the description day by day.

Breakfast consists of: fruit juice, tea, coffee, chocolate, milk, cereals, yogurt, bread or pancakes, jam, in the afternoons and while the cook prepares dinner: (tea, coffee and cookies) hot water.

At noon: Cold food for lunch: sandwiches, fruit, chocolate, candies.

Dinner: Vegetable or cream soup and a main course.

  • Five night in camping tents
  • Three-season camping tents with space for three people (to be used by 2 clients)
  • Foam mattresses
  • Private transport
  • Mules and muleteers to carry most of our mountain equipment: Camping material, (clients should only carry their daily backpacks) It is recommended to limit the weight per client to 10 kilos to be transported by pack animals.

The service does not include:

  • Accommodation and transportation outside the usual itinerary

  • Expenses as a result of delays and itinerary changes beyond the control of Pukina Travel, it is recommended to have travel insurance to cover unforeseen expenses.
